Oxygen converter is a typical facility used in the steel making processes aimed at removing impurities from melted iron.
The melted iron produced in a furnace is both hard to process and brittle, since the iron contains carbon and other impurities. Therefore, melted iron is placed inside a converter furnace, and is supplied with pure oxygen for a defined period in order to remove parts of carbon and impurities and produce clean melted iron.

POSCO E&C has considerable experiences in the construction of De-P (De-phosporization) furnaces in Pohang and Gwangyang, and currently performs an EPC turn-key project for a new steel making project at Pohang Steelworks. POSCO E&C has been expanding its converter furnace business to overseas markets based on the experiences from the steelworks project in Pohang and Gwangyang.

Nitrogen Splash Slag Coating facility for No.2
Steel making plant Gwangyang steelworks

A facility for evenly spraying the coating materials contained in slag onto the refractory inside the converter furnace by blowing high-pressure nitrogen through a lance after adding refractory coating materials such as soft-burned dolomite to the slag remaining in the converter furnace after pouring in melted iron from the furnace. This process ensures stable management and extends the maintenance interval of the furnace to save costs.

Project period: May 2000 ~ Mar. 2001
Production capacity: 8.5 million tons/year
Applied technology:
 Automatic control of nitrogen
pressure & flow rate, coating technique
