
POSCO E&C is Building the Future of South Korea's Advanced Scientific Infrastructure
In May 2026, POSCO E&C officially commenced the construction of the Ochang '4th Generation Circular Synchrotron Radiation Accelerator,' commissioned by the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI), further proving its unrivaled competitiveness in the field of large-scale accelerator construction. This project is a massive national research infrastructure undertaking with a total project cost of 1.1643 trillion KRW. It involves the construction of 13 educational and research facility buildings on a site of 310,000 m² with a total floor area of 69,524 m² in Hugi-ri, Ochang-eup, Cheongwon-gu, Cheongju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, and is scheduled to continue until December 2029.
POSCO E&C has solidified its leading position by accumulating numerous track records in constructing major domestic large-scale accelerators, following the Pohang 4th Generation Synchrotron Radiation Accelerator ('12–'15), the Daejeon Rare Isotope Science Project ('17–'21), and the Seoul National University Hospital Heavy Ion Therapy Center ('24–'26), leading up to this Ochang Synchrotron Radiation Accelerator ('26–'29). In particular, the company is demonstrating top-tier construction capabilities that meet extreme precision requirements, such as maintaining vibrations within 5–400 nanometers and temperatures at 25℃±0.1℃.
As an essential facility for securing source technologies in national strategic industries such as semiconductors, secondary batteries, bio-pharmaceuticals, and advanced materials, this project is a core national initiative to build a 4th-generation synchrotron radiation accelerator—a "dream light, giant microscope"—that realizes light more than 100 times brighter than the 3rd-generation (Pohang) facility. Moving forward, POSCO E&C will continue to contribute to the advancement of South Korea's science and technology and the creation of future growth engines based on its differentiated technological prowess and precision construction know-how.
