Introduction of Waste Recycling and Processing Facilities Considering Resource Circulation and the Environment
Participating in the Ministry of Environment’s national pilot project for waste resource recovery in 2011, Gwangju Metropolitan City moved away from conventional landfill- and incineration-centered waste disposal methods. Instead, it introduced a resource recycling approach that sorts and shreds combustible municipal waste to convert it into Solid Refuse Fuel (SRF). Through the introduction of these solid fuel-based waste recycling facilities, the city contributes to reducing air and water pollution that can occur during incineration and landfill operations, thereby alleviating the environmental burden on the urban area.
